The stained glass is used to communicate the story of the suffering and martyrdom of Father James. The death of Father James’ dog is one of his major points of suffering.
It is the only time he cries.
The upturned chalice is a reference to the main cause for which he died - his faith. The burnt paper similarly alludes to this, as it is symbolising the burning of the church in ‘Calvary’, and consequently, the holy scriptures.
